The Atlanta BeltLine
Project
Atlanta Audubon Society partners with
Trees Atlanta on a Birds and Wildlife Component for the Atlanta BeltLine
Project

Thanks to
grants from TogetherGreen and Beringer, Atlanta Audubon Society
was able to work on a special birds and wildlife component for the
Atlanta BeltLine project. Our partner on the grants was Trees Atlanta.
Our grant focused on giving a voice to the wildlife/birds living along
the Atlanta BeltLine, engaging in innovative, on-the-ground conservation
projects, and actively engaging citizens in the unique neighborhoods.
We were successful in
achieving the following project objectives:
developed an in-depth
field analysis and plan of the unique wildlife/bird species of each
of the seven “natural habitats” (identified habitats/neighborhoods:
West Connection, Warehouse Row, Southern Way, The Confluence, New
South, Piedmont Park and Entrenchment Creek);
worked with Trees Atlanta and the BeltLine to make recommendations
on future planning that would be both bird- and wildlife friendly;
conducted six restoration projects in the West Connection and
Warehouse Row neighborhoods; and
developed 14 beautiful and informative educational pieces—one for
each of the 14 natural neighborhood focusing on the unique
habitat/wildlife of the area.
The
educational pieces will be distributed throughout the coming years and
will be a vital step in the BeltLine future of building recognition and
community around the various seven natural neighborhoods. They will
serve as an important part of the conservation agenda to reduce threats
and engage audiences in citizen participation and environmental
stewardship. These neighborhoods already have “built-in” target
audiences with many educational facilities (schools—elementary/high
school—and universities such as Morehouse College, Spelman College,
Georgia Tech).
