Scholarships Opportunities Announced AAS is proud to offer the following educational scholarships for both teenagers and young adults:
Through our Echols Scholarship Fund, AAS will partner with GOS to send one young adult, age 21-29, to attend the Audubon “Field Ornithology” Camp in Maine from June 20 to June 25. Participants will enjoy a week of riveting field trips to habitats as diverse as offshore puffin islands, windswept blueberry barrens, lush grasslands, and sphagnum bog forests. Add some of the most respected bird experts in the country, and you have Field Ornithology on Hog Island – a layman's exploration of all things avian, from basic bird biology to nesting behavior, songs, migration and conservation. AAS and GOS will cover the $895 registration fee and up to $300 in travel expenses. Food and lodging is included in the registration. The recipient will make his or her own airline reservations. Applicants must be between the ages of 21-29 during the camp session and must be a Georgia resident. You must complete an application form and type an essay (300 word minimum) about your interest in birds and birding, what you will do with the knowledge you will gain, and how you will spread your interest in birds and bird conservation to friends. Be sure to include one letter of recommendation with the application. The recipient of the scholarship is expected to write an article describing her/his experiences at the camp which can be included in Wingbars and the GOS newsletter, GOShawk. To request a scholarship application, please email our Education Coordinator, Emily Toriani-Moura, at AtlantaAudubonED@gmail.com. Scholarship applications are due by April 19, 2010.
The Georgia Ornithological Society (GOS) will send two teens to Hog Island in Maine to take part in a special birding study June 20 - 25, 2010. Learn about seabird conservation from top ornithologists and add puffins, murres, and other coastal birds to your life list. GOS will cover registration fees and up to $550 in travel expenses. Food and lodging is included in the registration. For more information and a downloadable application form, visit www.gos.org/grants/parks.html.
